Have you ever been stopped in your scroll by the promise of something so good you just had to download it?

The promise of easy systems, generating sales on auto pilot, amazing food, or health tips. Whatever the topic, if you stopped your scroll and handed over your email address, the business has created a good freebie.

They have got you to exchange an important currency, they have succeeded in gaining your email address. When it comes to digital marketing, a potential client’s email address is a powerful asset.

But what makes a good lead magnet? How can you get people to stop their scroll, or to enter their details in a pop up?

Let’s explore what makes a good freebie now.

What Is A Freebie?

Before we go any further, let’s just quickly go over what a  freebie is. Also known as a lead magnet, a hook, or an ethical bribe, it is a valuable resource that you offer your ideal client in exchange for their email address.

The idea is to get them onto your email list so that you can start building a relationship with them. If you want to know more about what a lead magnet is and why you should have one, then check out last week’s topics.

Know Your Ideal Client

Before you can create any kind of resource, you need to establish who you are creating it for. Knowing your ideal client is THE most important thing in your marketing. You want to know:

  • Who they are
  • What their story is
  • What their struggles are
  • The messages and language that will speak to them
  • Their why
  • What they spend their time doing

The more you know your client, the better you can deliver. Know if they are male or female, what they do, what their story is – why they are doing what they are doing. Once you know who they are, you can speak to them in the right way, know where to find them, and how best to get in front of them.

What Makes A Good Lead Magnet?

In order to get people to hand over their email address you need to tick a few boxes. People are no longer convinced with a simple newsletter sign up box, they need to have something that will entice them to subscribe. So, here is what your freebie needs to do…

Be Of Great Value: It can’t be something they can find easily on the internet. It has to be something that provides real value and insight specific to your business.

Solve A Problem: Everyone out there has a problem that they need solving. Something that is causing them stress, taking a lot of time, or costing them a lot of money. If you can demonstrate that your business solves their problem for them easily, you will hook them in.

Be Specific: Pick a known desire that your ideal client has and then specifically create a solution that relates to that. It should not address multiple problems, just the one specific issue.

Look Good: Making a good impression counts and you can do that by supplying a resource that looks great and is consistent with your branding. If you don’t have the skills for this, then speak with a graphic designer or someone that does have those skills.

Leave Them Wanting More: Make sure you provide value, but don’t give away your whole solution for free. You simply want to peak their interest so that they can see your knowledge and make them want to work with you.

Quick To Consume: Ideally it should only take 5-10 minutes to complete and be delivered really fast. This early stage of contact should be a bite sized offer, later in your funnel you can provide something of greater substance and length.

Demonstrates Your Expertise: Prove to your ideal client that you know what you are talking about. That your business is the one for them as you can solve their problems with your knowledge and expertise.

A Catchy Title And Description: You could have a mind blowing, earth shattering revelation within your freebie offer, but no one will ever see it if you can’t entice them to read it. A catchy title and a compelling description of the contents will get eyes on your resource.

Examples Of Good Freebies

There are so many different mediums that you can use for your freebie offer. Here is a short list, but if you can think of another way to offer value to your audience, then by all means use it!
