Are you the ball and chain that’s holding yourself back when it comes to marketing your business?
Be honest with yourself.
So many people get tongue-tied and hesitant when it comes to promoting their products, their services, or themselves. This paralysis is more common than you think.
However, just because it is common does not mean that you should let these roadblocks stop you from effectively marketing your business.
If you are afraid to push ahead with marketing, are waiting for “perfection” before you act, or are just a bit hindered by your lack of know-how or negative self-talk, you are in the right place!
Let’s talk about some of the common marketing blocks, and how to navigate around them!
How To Overcome Your Marketing Blocks
Waiting For Perfection
If you are endlessly tweaking your ideas and every little marketing detail in the hunt for perfection, I’ve got great news for you: it’s never going to be perfect!
Why is that great news?
Because it means you don’t have to hold off on pushing that big red (metaphorical) launch button. There’s no such thing as perfect. Each person that comes across your marketing has a different perception of perfection – and you will never please them all.
But as long as you’ve done your research, know your target audience, and believe in what you have to offer, it will be good enough.
Accepting that you are going to create a (slightly) less than perfect product, campaign, ad, or blog takes the pressure off and can help you get going.
The Fear Factor
Peek behind the curtains in the mind of many a roadblocked entrepreneur, and you will see that fear is secretly running the show. Fear of failure, fear of looking stupid, fear of making a mistake, or sometimes even fear of success (yes, our brains can be tricky at times!)
One way to overcome fear is to acknowledge that marketing is often a matter of learning through trial and error. Even the experts need to do it that way sometimes! Marketing best practices are continually evolving. Instead of worrying about getting it wrong, focus on evaluating, learning, and adapting.
If something isn’t working, it is not a failure. It is simply an opportunity to tweak, overhaul or ditch in favour of a tactic that generates results.
Negative Self-Talk
Nothing feeds fear more than negative self-talk – and most of us don’t even realise we are doing it. Start paying attention to your mindset and the things that influence your decisions and actions (or lack thereof).
Adopting a more positive mindset can transform the way you approach your business and marketing. Start celebrating your successes and wins, no matter how small. If you see results from what you are doing, do a happy dance, have a glass of wine, and keep going!
It can be helpful to go back to the core vision and mission of your business. Remember why you started doing what you do, and revisit how fantastic your products or services are. If you really believe in what you are doing, you will project confidence to your customers and stop being your own best-kept secret.
A Knowledge Shortage
It’s normal to lack confidence in areas we don’t know much about. If you are feeling a bit out of your depth when it comes to marketing, don’t let that stop you! The only antidote to a lack of knowledge is… well… knowledge!
Don’t be afraid to ask someone (a mentor, a colleague, a friend) for help or do your own research. If time is a limiting factor, there’s no shame in outsourcing marketing. In fact, delegating or outsourcing not only gets the job done faster and to a higher standard, but upskills you in the process! Win-win!
The great thing about marketing is that success can come to anybody willing to put the time, effort and energy into finding what works for them. With a positive mindset, a can-do attitude, and the willingness to learn and evolve, you can overcome any marketing roadblock that comes your way.
